Sponsor Overview

As a Sponsor, you are responsible for your students.  This means that you should guide them through the entire process, from preparing for the Regional Competition to their behavior when attending States.

Registering for the Competition

The School, Sponsor & Students must all REGISTER for the Competition.

School Registration
If your school is already actively participating in the competition, then you do not have to worry about school registration.  If your school does NOT participate yet, then you will need to make sure your school gets registered for the competition.  See your Regional Director about School Registration.

Sponsor Registration
You will need to Register as a Sponsor for the Competition.  If you are from Regions 2, 6 or 7 you can register on the State Competition Registration System (see Sponsor Registration Process).  All other regions should see their Regional Director about Sponsor Registration.

NOTE: If you are in Region 2 and you registered for the competition last year - do NOT re-register, just LOGIN to the Competition Registration System.

Student Registration
Your Students need to be registered for the competition.  If you are from Regions 2, 6 or 7 your Students can register on the State Competition Registration System (see Sponsor Registration Process).  All other regions should see their Regional Director about Sponsor Registration.

NOTE: If you are in Region 2 and your Student registered for the competition last year - they should NOT re-register.  They can use last year's LOGIN to access the Registration System.

The Science Project

While some students may already have a project picked out and may need little help throughout the process, other students will need your guidance with this process.  Meet with your students to help them define their project and make sure they complete and submit the correct ISEF Forms for approval PRIOR to beginning their projects.

Prepping Your Students for the Competition

Once your Students' porjects are underway and the School, Sponsor & Student registrations have been completed, you should begin to encourage your Students to work on their Presentation.  The Presentation is critical to a successful Competition placement.  It is unfortunately too common that a Student will complete a Research Project that is worthy of a First place, only to fall short in their presentation.

Practice, Practice, Practice
When it comes to honing presentation skills, there is no replacement for actual practice.  There is a noticeable difference in the presentations of Students who have practiced their presentations versus Students who are presenting their Projects for the first time.  We encourage you to provide numerous opportunities for your students to practice their presentations prior to the day of competition,

Sponsor Responsibilities at States

Sponsors are responsible for the behavior of their Students. Your active participation is expected for maintaining proper behavior.  Students are expected to behave in a reasonable and respectable manner at both the Regional and State Competitions.

Students who violate the Behavior Code will be sent home immediately from the competition and their future participation in the competition may be jeopardized. All students and their sponsors are expected to read the Student Behavior Code and adhere to the policies contained within. A signed sheet confirming students have read and accepted the behavior code should be retained before and after the meet for each student by each regional director.
